SECTION I
Q1. Critically examine Gandhian approach to understand
social problems.
Gandhi's
approach to understanding and addressing social problems was deeply rooted in
his philosophy of nonviolence, known as Ahimsa, and his commitment to truth, or
Satya. Mahatma Gandhi's perspective on social issues was multi-faceted and
encompassed various dimensions, including political, economic, cultural, and
moral aspects. Below are some key elements of the Gandhian approach to
understanding social problems:
Nonviolence
(Ahimsa):
Central to Gandhi's
philosophy was the principle of nonviolence. He believed that true social
change could only be achieved through nonviolent means. This included not just
physical violence but also any form of harm or injury inflicted on others
through words, thoughts, or actions.
Gandhian
nonviolence aimed not only at the transformation of external behavior but also
the internal attitude of individuals and society.
Satyagraha
(Truth Force):
Gandhi
advocated the use of Satyagraha, a form of nonviolent resistance based on truth
and moral force, to address social issues. According to him, individuals should
actively seek and adhere to truth, even in the face of oppression.
Satyagraha was
not just a passive resistance but an active engagement with the truth,
demanding the willingness to endure suffering for a just cause.
Sarvodaya
(Welfare of All):
Gandhi
envisioned a society where the welfare of all, especially the marginalized and
downtrodden, was a priority. He believed in the concept of Sarvodaya, the
welfare of all, where the well-being of the weakest members of society was a
measure of the society's true progress.
Economic and
social policies, according to Gandhi, should be designed to uplift the poorest
and most vulnerable sections of society.
Swadeshi
(Self-sufficiency):
Gandhi
advocated for economic self-sufficiency at the local level through the
promotion of cottage industries and the use of locally produced goods. This was
seen as a means to empower communities and reduce dependence on external
factors.
Swadeshi also
had a cultural dimension, encouraging the preservation of indigenous traditions
and values.
Decentralization:
Gandhi was a
proponent of decentralized governance and believed in the importance of local
self-rule. He argued that decision-making should be at the grassroots level to
ensure that the needs and concerns of the local population were addressed
effectively.
Education and
Empowerment:
Gandhi
emphasized the role of education in social transformation. He believed in
education that focused on character building, moral values, and the holistic
development of individuals.
Empowerment,
according to Gandhi, involved not just political freedom but also economic
self-sufficiency and the development of one's moral and spiritual capacities.
Critics of the
Gandhian approach argue that it may be idealistic and impractical in certain
contexts. They point out challenges in implementing nonviolence in the face of
oppressive regimes and question the feasibility of some of his economic and
social ideas. However, many also acknowledge the enduring relevance of Gandhi's
principles and their potential to inspire positive change in society.
