They were often subjected to derogatory treatment, and Gandhi himself experienced instances of racial prejudice.

The mistreatment of Indians in South Africa served as a catalyst for Gandhi's activism. He began his nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience campaigns to address the injustices faced by the Indian community. His experiences in South Africa played a crucial role in shaping his philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which he later applied in India's struggle for independence.
