SECTION A
Q1. Discuss in brief basic concepts of ecology.
Ecology is the
scientific study of the relationships between living organisms and their
environment. It encompasses a wide range of scales, from individual organisms
to entire ecosystems, and examines the interactions between organisms and their
physical and biological surroundings. Here are some basic concepts in ecology:
Organism: The
basic unit of study in ecology is the individual organism. Ecologists examine
how organisms interact with each other and their environment to meet their
basic needs for survival and reproduction.
Population: A
population consists of a group of individuals of the same species living in a
specific area at a given time. Ecologists study population dynamics, including
factors such as birth rates, death rates, and migration patterns.
Community: A
community is formed by the populations of different species living in the same
area and interacting with each other. Community ecology focuses on the
relationships between species, such as predation, competition, and mutualism.
Ecosystem: An
ecosystem is a biological community and its physical environment, functioning
as an ecological unit. It includes living organisms (biotic factors) and the
non-living components like soil, water, and air (abiotic factors). Ecosystem
ecology studies energy flow and nutrient cycling within these systems.
Biome: A biome
is a large geographic biotic unit characterized by specific types of plants,
animals, and climate. Examples include deserts, rainforests, tundras, and
grasslands.
Biosphere: The
biosphere is the sum of all Earth's ecosystems, where life exists. It includes
the atmosphere, lithosphere (Earth's solid outer layer), and hydrosphere (all
water on Earth). The biosphere is the highest level of ecological organization.
Habitat: A
habitat is the specific environment in which an organism or community of
organisms lives. It provides the necessary resources, such as food, water, and
shelter, for the organisms to survive.
Niche: A niche
refers to the role or function of an organism or species within an ecosystem.
It includes how an organism obtains its energy and nutrients, where it lives,
and how it interacts with other organisms.
Biotic and
Abiotic Factors: Biotic factors are living components of an ecosystem, such as
plants, animals, and microorganisms. Abiotic factors are non-living elements,
including temperature, sunlight, soil, and water, that influence the
distribution and behavior of organisms.
Ecological
Succession: Ecological succession is the process by which an ecosystem
undergoes changes in its structure and species composition over time. Primary
succession occurs in newly formed habitats, while secondary succession occurs
after disturbances like fires or clear-cutting.
Understanding
these basic concepts helps ecologists analyze the intricate web of interactions
within ecosystems and gain insights into the functioning and dynamics of the
natural world.

ASSIGNMENTS
Dear Learner,
You have to submit one assignment in each course,
i.e. MANE 005 Solved Assignment 2023-24. All these are
Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). Before attempting the assignments, please
read the instructions provided in the Programme Guide carefully.
Kindly note, you have to submit these assignments to
the Coordinator of your Study Centre within the stipulated time for being
eligible to appear in the term-end examination. You must mention your Enrolment
Number, Name, Address, Assignment Code and Study Centre Code on the first page
of the assignment. You must obtain a receipt from the Study Centre for the
assignments submitted and retain it. Keep photocopies of the assignments with
you.
After evaluation, the assignments have to be returned
to you by the Study Centre. Please insist on this and keep a record with you.
The marks obtained by you will be sent by the Study Centre to the Student
Evaluation Division at IGNOU, New Delhi.
Guidelines for Doing
Assignments
There are five questions in each assignment, all carry
equal marks. Attempt all the questions in not more than 500 words (each). You
will find it useful to keep the following points in mind:
Planning: Read the assignments carefully. Go
through the units on which they are based, make some points regarding each
question and then rearrange them in a logical order
Organization and Presentation: Be analytical in
your selection of the information for your answer. Give adequate attention to
the introduction and the conclusion. Make sure that your answer is logical and
coherent; has a proper flow of information.
