SECTION A
Q1. Define ethnography? Discuss post-modern
ethnography.
Ethnography is a qualitative research method used in social sciences,
anthropology, and other disciplines to study and understand people and
cultures. It involves the in-depth observation and description of a particular
social group, community, or cultural setting, often through direct immersion
and participant observation. Ethnographers aim to provide a holistic and
detailed account of the practices, behaviors, beliefs, and social dynamics
within a specific context.
Post-modern ethnography,
also known as postmodernist ethnography, emerged as a response to the
challenges and critiques of traditional ethnographic methods associated with
modernism. Post-modernism rejects the idea of a single, objective truth and
questions the authority of the researcher as a neutral observer. Instead, it
emphasizes subjectivity, multiple perspectives, and the idea that reality is
socially constructed.
Here are some
key features and considerations associated with post-modern ethnography:
Reflexivity: Post-modern
ethnographers acknowledge their own subjectivity and the impact of their
presence on the research process. Reflexivity encourages researchers to be
aware of their biases, assumptions, and perspectives, and to reflect on how
these elements may influence the interpretation of data.
Multiplicity of
Voices: Post-modern ethnography recognizes that there are multiple, often
conflicting, perspectives within a community or cultural setting. Researchers
strive to incorporate diverse voices and narratives, challenging the notion of
a single, authoritative account of a culture.
Fluidity and
Hybridity: Post-modern ethnography challenges fixed categories and boundaries.
It acknowledges that cultures and identities are fluid, constantly changing,
and often characterized by hybridity—the blending of different cultural
elements.
Language and
Representation: Post-modern ethnographers are concerned with how language
shapes reality and influences the representation of cultures. They explore the
power dynamics inherent in the use of language and examine how certain
discourses may marginalize or empower particular groups.
Fragmentation
and Complexity: Instead of seeking to provide a unified and coherent narrative,
post-modern ethnography often embraces fragmentation and complexity. It
recognizes that social phenomena are multifaceted and cannot be easily reduced
to simple explanations.
Power
Relations: Post-modern ethnography critically examines power relations within
the research context. This includes the power dynamics between the researcher
and the researched, as well as broader issues of social, political, and
economic power that shape the context being studied.
Post-modern
ethnography challenges traditional notions of objectivity and universal truth,
advocating for a more nuanced and contextually sensitive understanding of
cultures and societies. Researchers adopting this approach often engage in
collaborative and participatory research methods, acknowledging the co-creation
of knowledge with the researched community.
