Assignment A
Answer the following
questions in 1000 words each.
Q1. Describe the
meaning and goals of Interpersonal psychotherapy and explain the problem areas
addressed by it.
Certainly!
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited, evidence-based treatment
that focuses on interpersonal issues. It originated in the 1970s and was
initially developed as a treatment for major depressive disorder. Over time,
its applications have expanded to other mental health conditions.
Meaning of Interpersonal Psychotherapy:
IPT is based on
the premise that there is a reciprocal relationship between interpersonal
problems and psychological symptoms. In other words, while interpersonal issues
can lead to psychological symptoms, these symptoms can also exacerbate or cause
interpersonal difficulties.
The therapy is
typically short-term, often lasting around 12 to 16 sessions, and focuses on
the here and now, rather than delving extensively into early developmental
experiences as some other therapies might.
Goals of Interpersonal Psychotherapy:
Symptom
Reduction: One of the primary goals is to reduce or eliminate the symptoms
(e.g., depressive symptoms) the client is experiencing.
Improve
Interpersonal Functioning: By addressing current interpersonal problems, IPT
aims to improve the client's relationships and social functioning.
Build Social
Skills: IPT can help clients develop and enhance skills to communicate, express
emotions, and manage relationships more effectively.
Problem Areas Addressed by IPT:
IPT targets
four primary problem areas that are believed to be linked to the onset and
persistence of psychological symptoms:
Grief (or
Bereavement): This focuses on the symptoms that arise following the loss of a
loved one. Unlike normal grief reactions, complicated grief reactions can be
prolonged and can significantly interfere with daily functioning.
Role Disputes:
These occur when the client and a significant person in their life have
differing (and often non-verbalized) expectations about their relationship.
This could be disputes with a spouse about roles in a marriage, disagreements
with coworkers, or conflicts with friends.
Role
Transitions: Life changes can often precipitate psychological symptoms. These
transitions might include retirement, becoming a parent, getting married or
divorced, losing a job, or any other major life change.
Interpersonal
Deficits: This area focuses on clients who have persistent difficulties in
forming and maintaining relationships. This might manifest as social isolation
or a pattern of unsatisfying relationships.
The therapist
and client collaboratively decide which problem area is most relevant to the
client's current situation and focus the treatment on addressing that area.
Sessions often involve discussions about the interpersonal issue, exploration
of emotions and feelings related to it, and the development of strategies and skills
to manage and resolve the issue.
Over the years,
while IPT was initially designed for depression, its efficacy has been
demonstrated for a range of other disorders including bulimia, post-traumatic
stress disorder, and bipolar disorder, among others. The interpersonal focus of
the therapy provides a structured yet flexible framework that can be adapted to
address a variety of psychological issues.

Q3. Explain
