a) Tribal Worldview
Having a tribal view to me means having a limited view.
It would be the view of just the tribe excluding anyone outside the tribe. The
tribe could be a few people, several hundred, or an entire nation. Tribal
worldviews may help keep the tribe cohesive and keep outside influences to a
minimum but I believe most tribal views are outdated. The challenges we face
today are global. For example climate change. If there is an ecological collasp
it won't matter if you are a Christian or a Muslim, from Russia or the United
States, black or white. We are all on the same ship. It may be time to abandon
Tribal Worldviews and start thinking of the big tribe. The worldwide tribe.
This includes not just humans but our fellow travelers on the ship. The
millions of other species on the planet.
Having a tribal worldview means that you see the whole
world through the eyes of the particular group (“tribe”) you identify as
belonging with. Usually, this is a bad thing, because in so doing you may
reject all other perspectives. It is an intensely subjective worldview, which
runs the risk of being intensely unscientific, irrational and unreasonable,
closed off to healthy skepticism and self-critique. Religious fundamentalism is
a form of tribalism.
However, if you belong to a group that has in fact been wronged and oppressed, and who is still living with the effects of this, then your tribal worldview could be an expression of the desire for social justice and restitution; a protest against continued injustice. Also, it depends on what is meant by the “tribal” reference. If it refers to a very large grouping, it may simply refer to the way of thinking of that group (for instance the way of thinking in your particular line of business), and may exist fairly peacefully with the ways of thinking of other groups.
b) Dalit Autobiography
The autobiography is a personal account of one's own
life. Several Dalits have written autobiographies detailing their life
struggles. This is a true testament to raising one's own voice through the
written word. The library collection of Dalit autobiographies consists of 22
titles. Most of these are in English or Marathi (language native to the Indian
state Maharashtra). Shashi Bhushan Upadhyay discusses the importance of Dalit
autobiographies in "Meaning of Work in Dalit Autobiographies".
Autobiographies are part of a literary genre that brings personal accounts of life in public domain. They incite others too to relate with their human emotions and circumstances with lived-up reality of the autobiography-writer. Autobiographies serve different purpose in different times and if autobiographies of Dalit writers are called as narrative of pain, it carries certain historical truth.
