1. How does the study of comparative literature affect
our understanding of world literature?

A abecedarian design of relative Literature is to
cultivate reading across verbal boundaries in order to punctuate everything
that the exclusive focus on a public literature tends to obscure. Studying
literature traditionally meant picking an academic department that reflects the
nation state on a principally European model. English, French, and German
programs each focus on the canons of their separate public traditions. But
literature and compendiums have both always ranged outside the boundaries of
one public language. German literature is brimming with the influences of
English and French and Italian and Greek and Roman literature and so on. And
indeed pens who knew nothing of one another may show fascinating parallels and
differences; a lyric by Stéphane Mallarmé and a lyric by Emily Dickinson throw each
other into astounding relief.
Traditionally, too, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern
literatures( when they were studied at each) were long relegated to the rubric
of Area Studies. The European literatures were understood as both aesthetically
independent and suggestive of the “ public genius, ” while textbooks from
thenon-West were read more from an ethnographic, literal, or anthropological
perspective than as workshop of literature in their own right. The field of
relative Literature also trials, also, to overcome this division between “ the
West ” and “ the Rest ” by combining the formal rigor of European erudite
studies with the interdisciplinary reach of area studies.
Scholars of relative Literature trace the metamorphoses
and peregrination of erudite stripes and textbooks across time and space. They
explore the connections of literature with history, gospel, politics, and
erudite proposition. And they study the corners of literature with other
artistic forms similar as film, drama, the visual trades, music, and new media.
In our decreasingly globalized age, restatement studies are also an important
part of the relative approach to literature. It’s unexpectedly tricky to say
that indeed a single judgment in one language is truly “original ” to its restatement
in another language; in what sense, also, can we really restate the complexity
and nuance of novels, runes or plays? And yet we all depend on restatements
sooner or latterly. Literary restatements also have their own kind of history
and indeed politics. Why do some textbooks get restated and others not, for
illustration? And how have the practice and proposition of restatement changed
over time?
At the core of the attention in relative Literature are
courses introducing Western, East Asian, Middle Eastern and South Asian erudite
traditions in relative perspective. These courses introduce scholars to the
global diversity of erudite forms and stripes while acquainting them with the
styles of relative erudite study. After or in tandem with the introductory
courses, scholars meet with their counsels to put together a program of study
that stylish suits their interests and pretensions. This will include advanced
work in at least one foreign language and its literature and a series of
interrelated courses of your choice. One seductive aspect of the relative
Literature major is its inflexibility. In close discussion with your counsel
you might decide to concentrate on anything from the modern novel to Romantic
poetry, postcolonial literature, or Greek and Japanese epics. At the same time
you'll have the occasion to take courses listed orcross-listed under the
relative Literature rubric( “ XL ”) that further hone your chops as a
comparatist, similar as “ Gender and Literature, ” “ Literary Translation, ” “ proposition
of the Novel, ” or “ Literature and Empire. ”
